Meal Planning and Shopping from the flyers ;)

Couponing for me saves me a TON of money...but there is another BIG way that I save even more!!!!

Every Thursday when the flyers come (usually at night when my kids go to bed so I can THINK lol) I sit down with my coupon binder, paper, pen, flyers and a cup of tea.  I start by doing my coupon match-ups to see what I can get for the best deal at which stores, and what I can price match at Walmart.  **I don't buy everything on my coupon match list...I simply make a note, not only for our loyal followers but for myself as well.  This helps me to remember what coupons I have in my binder, when they expire, and whether or not I am ever going to use them**

Once I have all my coupon match-ups done I make a simple chart starting from Friday-Thursday (you can pick any days of course, I just prefer Friday-Thursday because I do my shopping the day after the flyers come out to ensure that I get the products I want).  I don't bother with breakfast because we usually eat cereal...but I do make a plan for lunches and dinners.  I go through the flyer and make a note of the cheapest way I can make meals out of what is on sale.  For example...this week Walmart had ground chicken and sour cream on for a great price...and Food Basics had their flour tortiallas on sale for $1.00....see where I am going here?  Yup...quesadillas :)  This is also a really great way to get your family to try new foods :)  I use up some freezer foods, some pantry, and the rest I try to buy on sale :)

This way when you go to the grocery store you are armed with a list...a very strict list that you can adhere to, to stop from making impulse buys on stuff you don't need or even want (we have ALL done it lol).  Combine this with couponing (which allows us to stock our pantries and freezers) and we can maximize our savings!!!

Of course vegetables and fruits and milk and eggs hardly ever go on "sale" but if we can save money on the rest of our groceries then it's not soo bad :)

I challenge you this week to try making a meal plan for one week, shop from the flyers and use as many coupons as you can in your meal plan :)  Please send us your success stories...we would LOVE to share them on the blog!!!

I figured since the new school year is fast approaching that I would see what is out there for labeling kids stuff and after asking many moms the consistent response I got was Loveable Labels.  They have everything from bag tags to safety products to shoe labels that actually stay put.

Don't forget....a simple email or phone call to your fav companies can result in some great coupons!  Start by complimenting their product that you like and use then ask if they happen to have any coupons for loyal customers or if they could point you in the direction of some.  I have received a bunch of coupons by just asking.  But please remember DO NOT abuse this or companies will stop doing this.  I have a general rule of requesting no more than 2x/year.

Today's Parents coupons

In the September issue of Today's Parent I got some coupons!!!  There is a flyer for 10% off your purchase on reg and sale priced kids clothes of $40 or more (good Aug 13-19 2011) and in the magazine there is a BOGO Amooza Cheese Twist coupon (pg 61) exp dec 1 2011!

Not a coupon...just some money saving ideas :)

So we are doing some re-decorating, which we all know is crazy expensive.  I have come across some great ideas in this process and I wanted to share with my fellow Frugals :)

PAINT:
- I went to Walmart (I swear I LIVE there lol) and in the back in their paint section they have mis-tints.  I got some amazing paint in a gorgeous khaki colour for $7/gallon for one and $8.50/gallon for the other.  One of the paints is a contractors paint and it covers like a DREAM.  The room was a crazy primary blue before and we have almost full coverage after only two coats.  So before you go out and buy a $50 can of Behr paint, if you don't care TOO much about specific colours (perfect for a guest room or basment) then try the mis-tint section...great deals to be found!!!!!!

DECOR:
- So when we are done painting I'm going to need some new window coverings...and I'm getting them from Value Village.  Lots of people redecorate and there are some real gems out there if you are willing to go look.  I can get two panels for around $4.99 (for simple white drapes).  Worth looking into before you drop a TON on expensive window coverings.

FLOORING:
- Holy fricken moly flooring is expensive.  I need to replace about 150 sq. ft. of laminate after our water heater exploded in March and ruined our floor.  I'm getting a bunch of flooring from Kijiji.  I am paying $0.50 a square foot including the underlay.  That's about 1/2 price off that cheapest sales and store flooring doesn't come with underlay...you have to buy it separate.  SO...my point is to give USED items a thought...if you are doing something like a basement reno or freshen up, staging a home, or just aren't that picky look around, ask around and always check Kijiji :)

OTHER:
- Freecycle is amazing.  Ask and see if anyone has anything lying around that they aren't using.  Also check out yard sales and Kijiji :)
